How to Overcome Mid-Afternoon Slump and Maintain Productivity

Has it ever been the middle of the afternoon and you’ve found yourself drifting off, nodding your head and wondering how you’re going to make it through the day?

Welcome to the mid-afternoon slump, something we’ve all experienced.

Of course there are things that you do the day before or the day of that can exacerbate the mid-afternoon slump. One is, of course, not getting enough sleep the night before. But if you eat a huge amount of carbs, that can also lead to a spike and then a drop in blood sugar, which might create feelings of tiredness, too. And there are other factors that come into play, too.

If you’re trying to avoid coffee, there are other tactics you can take to try to wake up for the rest of the day. What are those and which can you take advantage of?

Here are my favorite things to do to overcome the Mid-afternoon slump and maintain productivity:

1. Go outside

Sunlight is a major player in setting your circadian rhythm. It triggers the brain to stay alert.

2. Go for a walk

Studies have found that walking for 10 minutes is more energizing than 20 milligrams of coffee.

Schedule a quick walk after lunch to maintain your energy. Another idea for when your jammed packed is to go for a walking meeting.

Walking helps you fight fatigue too.

3. Eat a healthy snack

These are just a few energy boosting foods you can try: almonds, avocados, apples, blueberries, carrots, dark chocolate, and oats.

4. Listen to music

Upbeat songs can not only boost energy but also bump up creativity level. Create a playlist with your favorite upbeat tunes for when you are feeling especially sleepy.

I use Brain.fm a lot for this!

5. Have a glass of water

My best favorite! Research shows that dehydration can impair cognitive function. Drinking lots of water all at once isn’t enough. You need to drink it throughout the day to stay hydrated.

These are my favorite things to get over the mid-afternoon slump. Of course there are other ways as explained in this infographic.

Now over to you…
